Carrot (Daucus carota) is a 2-year crop and belongs to the umbellifer family. In the second year, the carrot formed in the first year will flower and form seeds after a cool period. The area of carrots in Europe covers more than 87,000 hectares, where a variety of types and colours are cultivated.
Most industrial carrots are grown on sandy soils. These soils are quickly ready for sowing in spring and can be harvested well into autumn. The sandy and light clay soils are more suitable for storage carrots. Carrots on these types of soils grow firmer and are therefore easier to store.
