The cultivation of grain crops involves a complete life cycle: grains are sown and, after a complete cultivation cycle, newly formed seeds are harvested. All grain cultivation therefore has both a vegetative and a generative phase, in which a number of clear crop stages can be distinguished. Good recognition of crop stages is important for correct timing of fertilisation. After all, it is more effective to fertilise based on the crop stage than on the basis of crop length or calendar date.
